Grey's Anatomy has been a worldwide success for several years. It is one of the biggest medical series in the world, written by Shonda Rhimes, which became very well-known worldwide for daring dramatic stories, romances, tragedies that make the series the number one on the channel ABC.

1. Author's inspiration

Shonda Rhimes has always been interested in TV shows about surgeons, his favorites were the ones from Discovery Channel. However, the inspiration for the creation of the series came after a doctor shared her complicated experience of shaving her legs in a hospital bathroom. 

2. Series name 

The name of the series was also something unusual, Shonda thought about naming the series “Doctors”, then changed her mind to “Surgeons” and gave up, thought about “Complications”, until she came to the conclusion that “Grey's Anatomy” would be the best option.

3. Sandra Oh and Ellen Pompeo didn't audition for Meredith and Cristina

Initially, Ellen Pompeo had participated in some tests to join the cast of another series ABC, however, the actress did not get the job she wanted, but as a gift from life, she was invited to star in a series with her character's name.

Sandra Oh auditioned for Miranda Bailey, but ended up playing Dr. Yang, after saying she identified more with the role. 

4. Meredith and Cristina's friendship

The friendship between these two characters has remained stronger than many relationships and marriages, and has also overcome many obstacles. The two doctors have shared their lives together, despite being two completely different people, they get along very well and care for each other.

5. The series would not be set in Seattle 

Shonda wanted the series to take place in the same place where she was born and raised, Chicago, but completely changed her mind when she learned that the series Medical On Call which was already on the air and was set in his hometown. 

6. Kate Walsh was initially only going to do a few episodes. 

The idea was that Kate Walsh participated in some episodes like Addison Montgomery. But the acceptance of her character was so great that the actress was invited to join the regular cast and even had an episode just for her in the last season she acted. 

7. Isaiah Washington wanted to play Derek Shepherd

You didn't expect that, did you?! That's right, actor Isaiah Washington would have liked to have played the neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd, however the actor did not get the role, and was soon called to play Preston Burke, the great cardiologist surgeon. 

8. “Someone give me a sedative” was not in the script 

That's right, this line wasn't in the script for the scene and was entirely Sandra Oh's idea, which was very creative and very successful. This line was used when Cristina suffered a miscarriage. 

9. Shonda Rhimes had to convince ABC executives about the musical episode 

Shonda was unable to convince the network executives to do a musical episode, as it would be a very risky idea. After all, many people don't like musical series, and this would be a completely different proposal from what Grey's Anatomy offers. However, Shonda got what she wanted after receiving help from the actors who let their voices flow and showed that they also have a lot of talent for singing.  

10. Before becoming Dr. Arizona Robbins, Jessica Capshaw tried out for 3 roles 

Jessica Capshaw had to audition three times before she got the role of the incredible pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins. Jessica auditioned for the role of Nurse Rose, auditioned to play Sadie, Meredith's friend, and finally tried out for the role of pediatrician. The role in which the actress was very successful and became known worldwide for her achievements in the series. 

11. Chyler Leigh spent two days under a plane 

Exactly! Believe it or not, Chyler Leigh spent two whole days filming Lexie Grey's tragic death. The scene lasted only a few minutes on TV, but it took two days to film. 

Another interesting fact about Chyler Leig and Lexie Grey is that the doctor in the plot graduated from Harvard while the actress in real life did not finish high school. 

12. Shonda Rhimes was inspired by her mother to play Bailey 

Shonda has confessed in many interviews that Bailey It is your mother have many characteristics in common. In fact, some of Bailey's lines were inspired by his mother's lines. 

Another interesting fact is that Shonda wrote the entire series without giving names to the characters, with the exception of Miranda Bailey, who had already thought of the name from the beginning, and always imagined a “small, blonde and curly-haired” woman. The author thought it would be interesting to have a small woman with a sweet appearance saying harsh things every day. 

13. Mark Sloan was one of the author's favorites

Mark was one of Shonda's favorite doctors, which is why she was so reluctant to kill him, but despite the sadness, the author ended up realizing that there would be no other way out for the character after Lexie's sad death. 

14. Patrick Dempsey's fear of being disliked by Shonda

Dempsey was very afraid of not living up to all the expectations of his character Derek Shepherd. And so, when the series began filming, during their first meeting, Shonda spent a lot of time looking at Dempsey. Already desperate, believing that Shonda would not like him, he became very sad. When in fact, she was just looking at him and imagining his lines.

Another interesting fact about the actor and character is that Dempsey was given the nickname “McDreamy” by the cast before Derek, during filming.
