Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and consists of two measurements: systolic pressure (when the heart contracts and pushes blood into the arteries) and diastolic pressure (when the heart relaxes between beats).

Normal blood pressure in adults is generally considered to be 120/80 mmHg. However, values between 90/60 mmHg and 140/90 mmHg are considered normal for most people.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is when values are consistently above 140/90 mmHg. Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and kidney disease.

Low blood pressure (hypotension) is when values are consistently below 90/60 mmHg. Hypotension can cause dizziness, fainting, and may be a sign of an underlying medical problem such as dehydration, anemia, shock, heart or endocrine problems, among others.

The most accurate way to measure blood pressure is with a blood pressure device, which can be manual or automatic, and should be used by a trained healthcare professional. However, blood pressure measurement apps can be used as a complementary tool to monitor blood pressure.
