Let's talk about Basketball, or simply Basketball, it is a collective sport played between two teams.

Being played with only one ball, where the objective of the game is to make the ball hit the fixed basket that is located at the ends of the court.

Basketball is currently one of the most popular Olympic games in the world. Played in schools and is one of the most popular sports in physical education classes.

Created in 1891 by Canadian physical education teacher James Naismith, this sport emerged as an alternative to the harsh winters in the region, to the detriment of other outdoor sports such as baseball and football.

Furthermore, the original idea was to create a sport that was less violent than American football. In addition, the teacher who created it intended to integrate students into physical education classes and encourage group work.

Basketball Rules

As we have already said, the goal of basketball is to put the ball in the basket corresponding to your team. Inside the court there are two baskets, one on each side of the end of the court, 3.05 meters above the ground.

The place where the basket is located is called the backboard. To win the game, the team must score the most points. Note that the points vary depending on where the shot is made.

In other words, one point is added to a free throw, otherwise two points are added to the score. Points scored when players are close to the three-point line are added to 3 points.

The game is divided into 4 periods, each lasting 10 minutes. It is based on kicks, passing the ball and defensive and attacking positions.

Ball passes can be: hand passes, chest passes, chipped passes, shoulder passes and overhead passes. The most commonly used shots are the layup and the jump.

The so-called “slam dunks” are made by jumping and placing the ball in the basket. Note that players cannot take more than two steps with the ball in their hands. Before that, they must pass the ball to a teammate.

Absences

When a basketball game is underway, a player cannot commit more than 5 fouls. If this happens, he is out of the game. Fouls can be committed when there is:

  1. illegal contact between players;
  2. aggression between players;
  3. unsportsmanlike behavior.

Players

Basketball is played between two teams of 5 players each. They are classified as point guards, forwards and centers.

Block

It can be played indoors or outdoors. Regardless, both are 28 meters long by 15 meters wide. At least it has a length of 26 meters by 14 meters wide.

Quadra de basquetebol

The basketball court has several lines and markings:

  1. Side Lines: delimit the playing space.
  2. Central Line: located right in the middle of the block, it divides the total space into two equal parts.
  3. Central Circle: Above the center line is a circle drawn right in the middle of the court that is about 12 feet in diameter.
  4. Limit Lines: they also delimit the playing space, however, they are located behind the baskets.
  5. Free Throw Line: located closest to the basket and players throw the ball from the front.
  6. 3 point line: circular line located 6.75 meters from each basket. It receives this name because throws from this location are worth 3 points.
